EU silence is encouraging Catalans to consider not belonging to the European Union at all

The Spanish campaign to make it look like Catalonia would be expelled from the European Union is intentional political propaganda. In the open conflict between Spain and Catalonia, the Spanish government believes that threatening Catalan citizens with leaving us out of Europe would affect the way we'd vote in a referendum and could be an instrumental factor in blocking Catalonia's independence.


It's pretty significant to point out that this offensive is being carried out almost exclusively by Spanish political operatives in Brussels. The latest and rather pathetic example came yesterday with the foolish, falsehood-laden declarations of the European Parliament spokesperson, Jaume Duch. Spokesperson, by the way, who has a political past that amply explains his current positioning.


The European leaders from other countries besides Spain have kept quiet for now. Or they have released careful, discreet statements that, if desired, can be read between the lines as an indication that the apocalypse as described by the Spanish has little credibility. Meanwhile however, alongside this discreet silence, Spain is applying full pressure and even threatening its European partners who have begun to speak openly about how the recognition of an independent Catalonia by the European Union would occur.


But this silence and discretion could do irreparable harm to Europe. I don't think the Union is seeing, or is aware, that its silence is encouraging Catalans to consider not belonging to the European Union at all. The latest published polls show for the first time that a majority of Catalans believe that staying outside the Union is not a problem. And the question to the other Europeans is if they're aware what they're getting into by letting the Spanish hijack and blatantly manipulate Europe's position.

 Silenci UE s'anima als catalans a considerar que no pertanyin a la Unió Europea en absolut

 

L'ofensiva espanyola per a fer creure que Catalunya seria expulsada de la Unió Europea és propaganda política interessada. En el conflicte obert entre Espanya i Catalunya el govern espanyol creu que amenaçar els ciutadans catalans de deixar-nos fora d'Europa farà canviar el sentit del vot en el referèndum i serà un factor instrumental per a impedir la independència de Catalunya.

Sobre això, és molt significatiu de fer notar que l'ofensiva l'executen de manera quasi exclusiva dirigents polítics espanyols situats en l'estructura europea. El darrer exemple --ben penós--, ahir: unes declaracions insensates i plenes de falsedats del portaveu del parlament europeu, Jaume Duch. Portaveu, diguem-ho tot, amb un passat polític que explica de sobres la seua posició actual.

Els dirigents europeus que no són espanyols ara mateix callen. O emeten missatges prou matisats i discrets perquè es puga interpretar que l'apocalipsi verbal desfermada pels espanyols té poca credibilitat. Però mentrestant, i al costat d'aquest discret silenci, Espanya colla al màxim i fins i tot amenaça els socis europeus que han començat a dir obertament que el reconeixement d'una Catalunya independent per la Unió Europea seria un fet.

El mal d'aquest silenci i d'aquesta discreció és que poden perjudicar molt Europa. No crec que la Unió siga conscient que el seu silenci abona el creixement d'una posició dels catalans favorable a no formar part de la Unió Europea. Les darreres enquestes publicades indiquen per primera vegada que a una majoria de catalans no li faria res de restar fora de la Unió. I la pregunta als altres europeus és si n'és conscient, Europa, d'on es fica a base de deixar que els espanyols segresten i manipulen descaradament la seua posició?
