Help Catalonia : Sovereignty Debate is between Democracy and Anti-Democracy

MEP Raul Romeva urged the European Commission to sanction Spain regarding Catalonia's Chief Prosecutor Rodriguez-Sol's dismissal  because the European Union must protect the basic principles of democracy.

he MEP urged the European Commission to sanction the Spanish Government for the dismissal of Catalonia Senior Prosecutor, which was based solely on his personal statement regarding a referendum in Catalonia. Mr. Romeva believes the European Union must react before such a frontal attack on the independence of justice, defending the basic principles of democracy as it did recently with the Hungarian government's  project for tighter control of judicial proceedings. Mr. Romeva said that Catalan MEPs had decided to keep a close eye on the Spanish government because there is a certain unawareness in the European Union concerning the infringement of the basic principles of democracy in Spain.

In order to explain the true situation of Catalan institutions before the European Union, the Catalan MEPs have posed a question or interpellation to the European Commission for it take up the matter and to react firmly on this forced resignation imposed for purely political motives. According to Mr. Romeva, there is a need to explain the Catalan judicial reality to the European Union so they might react to such frontal attacks from the Spanish Government.
While the European Commission has a determining role in many areas regarding the Spanish Economy, it is hard to accept that such things go unnoticed and that there is no enquiry by the Commission" he said.
